Brightness is contextual, not morally pure

A white website background may look calm in a bright studio, then feel aggressively luminous in a dim room. The hex value did not change; the viewing conditions did. Screen brightness, ambient light, display technology, text contrast, and the amount of bright area all affect the experience.

The practical point is modest: a full-screen #FFFFFF background is one design choice among many. It is not the automatic definition of “clean.”

When everything is white, white loses its job

Visual hierarchy becomes harder when the page, cards, navigation, forms, and elevated panels all share the same white surface. Designers then compensate with more borders, more shadows, and more separators.

A quiet off-white page background gives pure white a useful role: it can mark a raised card, a focused work area, or a form that deserves attention. The interface gains depth without becoming dark or decorative.

Do bright websites cause eye strain?

People can genuinely find bright websites uncomfortable, especially in low-light environments or with a bright display. But discomfort is not proof that white backgrounds universally violate accessibility rules, and this site does not make that claim.

Start with a page background such as #F5F5F2. Keep a near-white surface for general content and reserve #FFFFFF for raised elements. Then test text and interface contrast as complete pairs—not as isolated hex values.
